History
Ryozo Kuze is the founder and CEO of the St. Cousair Company that sells
the highest-quality wines, jams, and dressings. Also, St. Cousair has two
outstanding restaurants located near its vineyards.
Ryozo Kuze was born in Tokyo. His father owned a company that sold ketchup
and other condiments. Beginning at a young age, Ryozo helped his father
with the family business. This working experience provided Ryozo with the
necessary skills and knowledge to start his own company. Because Ryozo
loved to ski, he decided to move from Tokyo to Madarao located in the mountainous,
snowy region of the northernmost part of Nagano Prefecture.
1975. Ryozo started his first business by purchasing and running a little
lodge at Madarao. The second day after he opened his business, a young
woman named Mayumi, who lived in Yokohawa, checked into the lodge as a
customer. Shortly thereafter, Ryozo Kuze fell in love with Mayumi and proposed
to her. After they were married, they ran the lodge together. But the lodge
was not profitable enough so they tried to find other ways to supplement
their income.
1979. Because Mayumi had learned how to make delicious home-made Apple
Jam, they started selling the jam to their customers at the lodge. The
jam was so good that the demand for it outstripped their ability to keep
up with the demand. Consequently, Ryozo started preparing plans for a company
that could produce the home-made jam on a larger scale to meet the increased
demand.
1987. Mr. Kuze bought land for the office and restaurant
1988. Building completed in Iizuna
1989. Restaurant opens
1990. Winery opens
